Which French Anki Deck to Start With? Why French Is a Special Case
The short answer: the usual advice is “start with vocabulary,” and for most languages that’s right. French has one wrinkle that makes pronunciation a stronger first move than usual — so read the next 60 seconds before you decide.
Why French isn’t the standard case
In a language like Spanish, spelling tells you the sound, so you can start piling on vocabulary and your pronunciation more or less follows. French breaks that link. The written word and the spoken word drift apart: ils parlent sounds like il parle, beaucoup hides letters you never pronounce, and the nasal vowels in un bon vin blanc don’t exist in English at all. If you learn 2,000 French words off the page without training your ear, you build 2,000 words you can read and can’t say — and can’t recognise when a French person says them back.
