What's Inside Every Deck
Every card in every language is built to the same professional standard.
High-Quality Audio on Every Card
Every word comes with a clear high-quality audio recording. You hear the correct pronunciation from day one — no guessing, no bad habits building up.
IPA Phonetic Transcription
International Phonetic Alphabet notation on every card so you know exactly how to pronounce each word — even the very first time you see it.
Grammar Gender Colour-Coding
Noun genders are colour-coded on every card. You absorb the correct gender automatically — without memorising separate grammar tables.
Example Sentences in Context
Each word appears in a real example sentence. Context is how language sticks — not isolated definitions you'll forget by next week.
Frequency-Ranked — Most Useful Words First
Words are ordered by how often they appear in everyday speech, based on academic frequency research. You always learn the highest-return words first.
Built for Anki's Spaced Repetition
Optimised for Anki's SRS algorithm — import once and Anki automatically schedules every review. Maximum retention for minimum daily time.
See What the Cards Look Like
Two randomised card variations per word across all 8 languages.
Two Card Variations Per Word
Each of the 100 words comes as two different card variations so you're tested from multiple angles. This forces deeper encoding and prevents you from memorising the card order rather than the actual word.
The front shows the word in your target language. The back reveals the translation, IPA, audio, and an example sentence in context — everything you need to truly learn it.
Part of Speech & Grammar Notes
Every card shows the part of speech (verb, noun, adjective…) and any relevant grammatical notes — including irregular forms, gender, and usage patterns specific to that word.
For Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Dutch, noun genders are colour-coded so you internalise them with zero extra effort. Grammar becomes a background habit, not a separate study task.
Why Start With the Top 100 Words?
"The 100 most frequent words in any language account for roughly 50% of all words used in everyday conversation."
— Based on word frequency research by Paul Nation, Victoria University of Wellington
Starting with the most frequent words is the single smartest move a language learner can make. Words like to be, to have, I, you, what, want appear in almost every sentence you'll ever hear or say in a new language.
Zipf's Law — the science behind frequency learning
In the 1930s, American linguist George Kingsley Zipf studied word statistics across a huge range of texts and discovered a remarkable pattern now known as Zipf's Law: a small number of words are used extremely frequently, while the vast majority of words in any language are rarely used at all. His conclusion — that learning high-frequency words first is the most efficient way to build a functional vocabulary — has been repeatedly confirmed by modern corpus linguistics research.
Word coverage — the numbers
Corpus studies show how far frequency-based learning gets you at each vocabulary threshold:
To put that in perspective: the single word the accounts for roughly 7% of all written English text. High-frequency words truly are everywhere. The Top 100 Words deck is the right starting point — not because 50% coverage equals fluency, but because it gives you a foundation that makes every subsequent word you learn easier to retain. When half the words surrounding an unknown word are already familiar, context starts doing the teaching for you.
Compare this to most vocabulary courses, which teach words like "umbrella" and "suitcase" in lesson one because they're easy to illustrate — not because they're useful. Frequency-ranked learning means you're always working on the highest-return words first.
📚 A note on what "100 words" actually means
When linguists say "100 most common words", they mean 100 lemmas — the base form of each word. Eat, eats, ate, eating are not four separate words; they're one lemma. Our decks follow this standard, so your progress maps accurately against language-level benchmarks (A2, B1, etc.) rather than being inflated by counting every verb conjugation separately.
