Why This Is the Fastest Way to Learn French Vocabulary

Learn the Words That Actually Matter First

The Larousse French dictionary contains over 200,000 entries. Native speakers use only a fraction of that in daily conversation. Word frequency research by linguist Paul Nation at Victoria University of Wellington shows that the 2000 most common words account for 90% of everyday spoken French. That's the principle behind this bundle: rather than learning vocabulary at random, you learn by frequency, so every word you add carries the maximum possible return. The 500 Picture Words deck covers the most frequent, most visual words. The Top 2000 Words deck completes the list. Together they give you the most efficient path to French comprehension.

Build Direct Mental Connections and Learn Gender Automatically

French grammatical gender is one of the first major challenges for English speakers, and rote memorization of noun genders rarely sticks. The 500 Picture Words deck solves both problems at once. Every card uses an image instead of an English translation, so you build a direct mental link between the French word and the concept. And every card uses gender color-coding: blue for masculine, red for feminine. You see the colour every time you review the card, so gender becomes part of the word's identity in your memory, not a separate fact you have to recall under pressure. MIT research showed long-term memory can retain thousands of images with high fidelity; the color-image combination exploits exactly that capacity.

Comprehensible Input: Learn French as It's Actually Spoken

Written and spoken French diverge considerably: liaison, elision, and silent letters mean the written form often doesn't reflect the spoken one. Linguist Stephen Krashen's input hypothesis shows learners progress fastest when they encounter language slightly above their current level in a comprehensible context. The Top 2000 Words deck is built on this principle: every word is presented in a French sentence using only words from within the 2000-word list, so the context is always understandable. Linguist Michael Lewis showed that learning words in "lexical chunks," meaning real sentences, produces faster recall and more natural output than learning isolated vocabulary. Every example sentence in the deck reflects how French is actually used, including common collocations and idiomatic patterns.

Common Phrases Bridge Vocabulary to Real Speaking

Knowing 2000 French words and being able to hold a French conversation are two different things. French has a rich set of fixed phrases and formal registers that learners need before vocabulary knowledge translates into confident communication: tu vs vous, polite formulas for introductions, workplace expressions, travel language. The Common French Phrases deck, exclusive to this bundle, covers the top 100 practical phrases for airports, restaurants, phone calls, professional settings, and everyday interactions. These ready-made structures give you speaking scaffolding while your grammar instincts are still developing.

Complete Your French System

Add the French Grammar Bundle

Once you have vocabulary, grammar gives you the structure that connects it all. The French Grammar Bundle includes 6 decks covering every CEFR level (A0–C1), organized into Beginner Grammar (A0–A2) and Intermediate & Advanced Grammar (B1–C1), covering verb conjugations, tenses, subjunctive, agreement rules, and more. The logical next step after vocabulary.
