The IELTS Intermediate Grammar Flashcards are a ~1,874-card Anki deck covering the English grammar structures that define IELTS performance at Bands 4–6, equivalent to CEFR levels B1 and B2. Based on research by linguists Paul Nation and Stephen Krashen, you learn these structures gradually in the context of real English sentences, so each rule is acquired in use rather than memorised in isolation.
After you master the grammar covered in this deck, you will have command of every major grammatical structure at the Independent English User level: the range that distinguishes Band 5 from Band 6 in IELTS Writing. Each card presents a real English sentence containing the target grammar rule, with the structure highlighted. The back of the card provides a clear “pop-up” grammar explanation, precise enough to remove a specific confusion without requiring you to consult a textbook.

The Band 4–6 Grammar Jump
Grammatical Range and Accuracy is one of four criteria for both IELTS Writing Tasks and counts for 25% of your Writing band score. IELTS examiners describe Band 5 grammar as: “uses only a limited range of structures” with “frequent grammatical errors.” Band 6 is: “uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms” and “makes some errors but they rarely cause comprehension problems.”

The Band 4-to-6 gap is almost entirely explained by two factors: grammatical range (variety of structures attempted) and error rate (accuracy in those structures). This deck addresses both. ~1,874 cards cover the complete B1–B2 grammar inventory: conditionals, passive constructions, modal verbs, relative clauses, reported speech, and perfect tenses, with at least two sentence examples per rule and explicit examiner-level descriptions of where each structure appears in the IELTS assessment criteria.
Each grammar point is tested through all three card types: Sentence Comprehension, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in-the-Blank, so you develop both receptive recognition and active production. Multiple Choice cards in particular train the precise grammatical discrimination that IELTS tests: two similar sentences, one correct, one subtly wrong. Following Stephen Krashen’s comprehensible input research, every sentence is graded slightly above your current level, comprehensible but not trivial, so grammar is acquired in context rather than drilled out of it.
