IELTS Essential Grammar Flashcards Cover

The IELTS Essential Grammar Flashcards are a ~1,390-card Anki deck covering the foundational English grammar structures required for IELTS Bands 1–3, equivalent to CEFR levels A1 and A2. Based on research by linguists Paul Nation and Stephen Krashen, you learn these grammar rules gradually in the context of real English sentences, so you see each structure in use rather than memorising rules in isolation.

After you master the grammar covered in this deck, you will have command of every major grammatical structure at the Basic English User level, the foundation that IELTS Bands 1–3 require. Each card presents a real English sentence containing the target grammar rule, with the target structure highlighted. The back of the card provides a clear “pop-up” grammar explanation, precise enough to remove a specific confusion without requiring you to read a grammar textbook.

What You Learn

  • Basic sentence structure: subject + verb + object, questions, and negatives, the clause patterns all higher grammar depends on
  • Core tenses: present simple, present continuous, past simple, past continuous, future with “will” and “going to”
  • Articles: “a,” “an,” “the,” and zero article, one of the most persistent error types among non-native speakers
  • Prepositions of time and place: at, on, in, to, from, with, by
  • Countable vs uncountable nouns and their determiners (much, many, a lot of, some, any)
  • Comparatives and superlatives
  • Three card types (Sentence Comprehension, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in-the-Blank), testing both recognition and production of each rule
  • Spaced repetition to focus review on the structures you find hardest, with automatic progress tracking across all ~1,390 cards

Grammar in IELTS Writing

Grammatical Range and Accuracy is one of four criteria for both IELTS Writing Tasks and counts for 25% of your Writing band score. For lower-band candidates, the most direct path to score improvement is eliminating systematic errors in foundational grammar (articles, subject-verb agreement, tense consistency) before attempting to extend grammatical range.

IELTS BandCEFR LevelGrammar requirement
Band 1–2Pre-A1Basic clause structure; present simple only
Band 3A2Core tenses; articles; simple sentence patterns: this deck
Band 4–6B1–B2Complex and compound structures; conditionals; passive voice
Band 7–9C1–C2Wide range; sophisticated grammar used flexibly and accurately

Until the Bands 1–3 core is secure, time spent on higher-band grammar preparation is inefficient. This deck targets every foundational structure at the A1–A2 level, with at least two sentence examples per grammar rule. Each point is tested through all three card types (Sentence Comprehension, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in-the-Blank), so you develop both receptive and productive command of the structure.

Cards are sequenced to build progressively: absolute beginner clause structures first, then the core tenses and determiners that IELTS Bands 1–3 require. Following Stephen Krashen’s comprehensible input research, sentences are always slightly above your current level (comprehensible but not trivial), so grammar is acquired in context rather than drilled in isolation. When you do need help, the pop-up grammar explanation on the back delivers the rule precisely, without a detour through a textbook.

This deck is included in the IELTS Grammar Bundle, alongside Intermediate Grammar (Bands 4–6) and Advanced Grammar (Bands 7–9) decks.

Available in American and British English

Both editions contain the same grammar content; the sentence audio uses native speakers of each respective accent.
