What Grammar Rules Do You Need for IELTS — and Why?

Grammar is one of the four band descriptors in both IELTS Writing and IELTS Speaking — worth 25% of your score in each. The Grammatical Range and Accuracy descriptor assesses two distinct things: the range of structures you use and the accuracy with which you use them. To improve your band score, you need both.

Follow the CEFR Progression

The IELTS Grammar Bundle is structured using the internationally recognised CEFR progression — from A1 (beginner, Bands 1–3) through B2 (upper intermediate, Bands 5–6) to C2 (mastery, Bands 8–9). This means you learn grammar rules in the right order: foundational structures first, then complex extensions, then the sophisticated range that distinguishes band 7+ responses.

Pop-Up Grammar for Efficient Learning

Based on Stephen Krashen's research on comprehensible input, every flashcard presents a complete English sentence containing the target grammar rule. You check whether you understand the sentence and its grammar. If you do, the rule is acquiring naturally. If you need help, the back of the card provides a clear grammar explanation — the "pop-up" that removes the confusion without requiring a textbook.

The Band 6-to-7 Grammar Jump

IELTS examiners describe Band 6 grammar as: "uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms." Band 7 adds: "uses a variety of complex structures with some flexibility and accuracy." The Intermediate and Advanced Grammar decks specifically target the structures that create this variety: conditionals, passive voice, relative clauses, inversion, fronting, and nominalisations — the grammatical signatures of high-band IELTS responses.
