English IPA Pronunciation Flashcards

The English IPA Pronunciation Flashcards are a 561-card Anki deck that teaches you every sound in the English language using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The IPA gives you a symbol for every distinct sound in English — a permanent, reliable map of how words are actually pronounced, regardless of how they’re spelled.
English spelling is notoriously inconsistent: “though,” “through,” “thought,” and “tough” share the same four letters but produce four entirely different vowel sounds. The IPA cuts through that inconsistency entirely, giving you a direct path to correct pronunciation without needing to guess from the spelling. Mastering English IPA also sharpens your listening comprehension — learners who know IPA recognise sounds in connected speech more accurately, making fast, natural English much easier to follow.

Why IPA Is the Key to Correct English Pronunciation
English Spelling Is an Unreliable Guide
Most learners try to pronounce English by reading the letters. This works for some words — and fails completely for others. “Read” is pronounced /riːd/ in the present tense and /rɛd/ in the past. “Lead” follows the same pattern, or doesn’t, depending on the word. “Colonel” is pronounced /ˈkɜːrnəl/. Without IPA, every word like this requires you to memorise an exception.
The IPA eliminates the problem entirely. Once you know the symbol /iː/, you know the sound — regardless of whether it’s spelled “ee”, “ea”, “ie”, “ei”, “ey”, “e_e”, or any other combination. One symbol, one sound, no exceptions.
A Self-Correction Tool You Keep Forever
One of the most valuable things you gain from learning IPA is independence. Once you know the symbols, you can look up any English word in a dictionary, read the IPA transcription, and know exactly how to pronounce it — without needing a teacher, a native speaker, or an audio recording.
This turns every vocabulary dictionary into a pronunciation guide, and every new word into something you can immediately pronounce correctly on the first encounter.
Sharpen Your Listening as Well as Your Speaking
Learning IPA doesn’t just improve how you produce sounds — it changes how you hear them. When you study English sounds explicitly, you start noticing distinctions in natural speech that you previously missed: the difference between /ɪ/ and /iː/, between /θ/ and /s/, between /v/ and /b/. This sharpened phonemic awareness makes fast, connected English speech much easier to understand.
We Recommend Starting Here
Of the three English pronunciation decks, we recommend starting with IPA. Once you know the IPA symbols, the Minimal Pairs deck becomes immediately interpretable — you can see exactly which sound is different in each pair. And every vocabulary word you learn from then on, you can look up and pronounce correctly from the first time you encounter it.
Available in American and British English
English IPA differs slightly between American and British pronunciation — for example, the American /r/ in words like “car” and “bird” vs. the British non-rhotic vowel. This deck is available in both editions, with audio from native speakers of each accent. Choose the edition that matches the accent you’re preparing to use, or study both — they’re included together in the English Pronunciation Bundle.
