Free Polish Anki decks

AnkiWeb’s shared-deck library is the first place most learners look, and it is free. Search for “Polish” and sort by rating, but check the direction first: many of the top results are for Polish speakers learning English. Before you commit weeks to a deck, check three things:

  1. Audio on every card. Polish sounds like ś, cz, rz and the nasal vowels ą and ę are hard to guess from spelling alone.
  2. Sentences, not just single words. Polish words change their endings in a sentence, so a word on its own only shows you one form.
  3. Who maintains it. A deck last touched years ago keeps its mistakes.

Two free decks worth a look, described from their AnkiWeb pages:

  • Polish-English is the most-rated deck on AnkiWeb for learning Polish from English: over 10,000 words, phrases and sentences, tagged by level so a beginner can start with the easy ones. It has no audio and was last updated in 2012.
  • Polish Sentences: about 3,000 sentences sorted from easy to hard, updated 2023. Only 500 of them have audio.

The language-learning communities on Reddit (r/Anki, r/learnpolish) share and discuss decks too, and are a good place to ask whether a deck is still worth using.

Building your own deck

Making your own cards works, and some learners remember them better for having made them. The cost is time: a 2,000-word deck with audio and example sentences is weeks of work before you study a single card, and for Polish you also need a source you trust for pronunciation. If you go this way, add audio and a full sentence to every card, and use our guide to Anki for Polish for settings.

The Speakada Polish decks

We make Anki decks for Polish in two layers: pronunciation and vocabulary. The cards come with audio, the pronunciation and word decks show IPA, and the 2,000-word deck teaches each word inside a full sentence. If you find a mistake, email us and we fix it in the next version.

1. Pronunciation Bundle: $150

Polish pronunciation is where most English speakers get stuck. Three decks set up the right sounds before bad habits set in:

  • Alphabet: every letter with audio, including the nasal vowels ą and ę and the consonants English does not have
  • IPA: every Polish sound, so you can tell ś, cz, sz and rz apart and read the pronunciation of any word you meet later
  • Minimal pairs: pairs of words that differ by one sound, focused on the contrasts that confuse English speakers most

Polish Pronunciation Bundle

Polish has one of the steepest pronunciation curves in any European language - consonant clusters, nasal vowels, and pitch distinctions. Three decks build the correct sound model systematically before errors fossilize.

2. Vocabulary Bundle: $400

The words you will meet most often, in frequency order:

  • 500 Picture Words: common words taught with images instead of English translations, colour-coded by gender
  • Top 2,000 Words: each word in a full example sentence
  • Common Phrases: everyday expressions for conversation and travel

Polish Vocabulary Bundle

90% of everyday Polish comes from just 2,000 words - these 3 decks cover them in frequency order: 500 Picture Words, Top 2,000 Words with full sentences, and Common Phrases.

Only want part of it? The 500 Picture Words deck ($160) and the Top 2,000 Words deck ($300) are also sold on their own.

Which should you choose?

  • Complete beginner: Pronunciation first, then Vocabulary. In Polish, getting the sounds right early saves the most trouble later.
  • You already read Polish but want more words: the Vocabulary Bundle.
  • Not ready to pay: a free shared deck from the checklist above, or our free 20-word starter deck below.

After you choose a deck

  3. Study every day: a short daily session beats a long weekly one, because Anki schedules each card for the day you are about to forget it.
  4. Sync: use a free AnkiWeb account to study on your phone and computer.
