Free Italian Anki decks

AnkiWeb’s shared-deck library is the first place most learners look, and it is free. Search for “Italian” and sort by rating. Before you commit weeks to a deck, check three things:

  1. Audio on every card. Without it, you learn spellings, not words you can say or hear.
  2. Sentences, not just single words. A word on its own is easy to recognise and hard to use.
  3. Who maintains it. A deck last touched years ago keeps its mistakes.

Two free decks worth a look, described from their AnkiWeb pages:

  • Italian Core 100: 101 common words and phrases with audio and pictures, from ItalianPod101’s word list. Small and last updated in 2015, but every card has audio.
  • First 625 Italian words: pictures and audio, no English. The author marks it unfinished: 355 of the 625 words, last updated in 2016.

The language-learning communities on Reddit (r/Anki, r/italianlearning) share and discuss decks too, and are a good place to ask whether a deck is still worth using.

Building your own deck

Making your own cards works, and some learners remember them better for having made them. The cost is time: a 2,000-word deck with audio and example sentences is weeks of work before you study a single card. If you go this way, add audio and a full sentence to every card, and use our guide to Anki for Italian for settings.

The Speakada Italian decks

We make Anki decks for Italian in three layers: pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. The cards come with audio, the pronunciation, word and grammar decks show IPA, and the 2,000-word and grammar decks teach each word or rule inside a full sentence. If you find a mistake, email us and we fix it in the next version.

1. Pronunciation Bundle: $60

Italian is spelled almost the way it sounds, but the sounds still have to be learned before wrong habits set in. Three decks:

  • Alphabet: every letter with audio and example words
  • IPA: every Italian sound, so you can read the pronunciation of any word you meet later
  • Minimal pairs: pairs of words that differ by one sound, to train your ear

Italian Pronunciation Bundle

Italian is phonetically consistent, but that consistency still has to be drilled before wrong patterns set in. Three decks cover the complete sound system: alphabet, IPA phonemes, and minimal pairs.

2. Vocabulary Bundle: $220

The words you will meet most often, in frequency order:

  • 500 Picture Words: common words taught with images instead of English translations, colour-coded by gender
  • Top 2,000 Words: each word in a full example sentence
  • Common Phrases: everyday expressions for conversation and travel

Italian Vocabulary Bundle

90% of everyday Italian comes from just 2,000 words - these 3 decks cover them in frequency order: 500 Picture Words, Top 2,000 Words with full sentences, and Common Phrases.

Only want part of it? The 500 Picture Words deck ($110) and the Top 2,000 Words deck ($185) are also sold on their own.

3. Grammar Bundle: $400

Six decks from absolute beginner (A0) to advanced (C1). Each card drills one grammar rule inside a sentence, with the rule a tap away when you need it.

Italian Grammar Bundle

Italian grammar clicks when you learn it in the right sequence. These 6 decks take you from A0 beginner through C1 advanced, one CEFR level at a time - building real accuracy rule by rule.

Or by level: Beginner, A0 to A2 ($200) and Intermediate and Advanced, B1 to C1 ($240).

All three: Ultimate Bundle, $597

Pronunciation, Vocabulary and Grammar together. See what is included.
