WHY SHOULD I LEARN UKRAINIAN PRONUNCIATION?
Sounds of Ukrainian are the Foundations of the Language
Ukrainian has sounds and contrasts English doesn’t. The vowels и and і change meaning: кит (whale) and кіт (cat), дим (smoke) and дім (house). The soft sign turns рис (rice) into рись (lynx). The letter г is a soft [ɦ], different from ґ [ɡ] and from х: голод (hunger) and холод (cold). Spelling alone won’t get these right, so you need to learn the sounds themselves.
Learn Ukrainian Pronunciation to Avoid Permanent Errors in Speaking
If you speak with poor Ukrainian pronunciation, native speakers may not understand you, even when your vocabulary and grammar are perfect. Language experts call it “fossilization” when learners make permanent errors because they keep using the sounds of their native language. Getting the sounds right from the beginning is far easier than fixing an accent later.

HOW DO I LEARN UKRAINIAN PRONUNCIATION?
1. Ukrainian Alphabet
The Ukrainian alphabet has 33 letters, including і, ї, є and ґ, which Russian doesn’t have. Each card teaches a letter’s name and sound with audio, and shows a real Ukrainian word with a picture.

2. Ukrainian IPA
The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is a standard way to write down exactly how a word sounds. Each card links a Ukrainian sound to its IPA symbol, an example word with a picture, and audio, including recordings of each sound from the IPA chart.

3. Ukrainian Minimal Pairs
Minimal pairs are 2 words that sound almost the same, except for 1 sound. Our Ukrainian deck has 34 pairs covering the contrasts learners find hardest: и vs і, hard vs soft consonants, г vs ґ vs х, ж vs ш, з vs с, voiced vs voiceless consonants, and the vowels о, у and а. For example:
“кит” (whale)
“кіт” (cat)
