WHY SHOULD I LEARN KOREAN PRONUNCIATION?

Sounds of Korean are the Foundations of the Language

Korean words are made up of Korean sounds, and some of the most important ones don’t exist in English. Most Korean consonants come in three versions: plain, aspirated (with a puff of air) and tense. 달 (moon), 탈 (mask) and 딸 (daughter) differ only in that one sound. Vowels such as ㅓ and ㅗ, and the consonants at the end of a syllable, also change meaning. If you can’t hear these differences, you can’t say them, so you need to learn the sounds themselves.

Learn Korean Pronunciation to Avoid Permanent Errors in Speaking

If you speak with poor Korean pronunciation, native speakers may not understand you, even when your vocabulary and grammar are perfect. Language experts call it “fossilization” when learners make permanent errors because they keep using the sounds of their native language. Getting the sounds right from the beginning is far easier than fixing an accent later.

Self-correction and a Boost of Confidence

You can’t have a tutor follow you everywhere and correct your pronunciation. The best solution is to learn to self-correct: to catch your own mistakes before they cause a misunderstanding. The Korean Pronunciation Bundle helps you remember every important Korean sound so you can do exactly that, and hearing yourself improve builds the confidence to speak.

HOW DO I LEARN KOREAN PRONUNCIATION?

Korean pronunciation can be broken down into 3 parts: the Korean alphabet, Korean IPA and Korean minimal pairs. Each part improves your pronunciation in a different but essential way.

1. Korean Alphabet

Hangul is the Korean alphabet, and the good news is that it was designed to be learned quickly. Each card teaches a Hangul letter with its name, its sound and native audio, and shows a real Korean word that uses it. Once you know Hangul, you can read any Korean word aloud.

2. Korean IPA

The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is a standard way to write down exactly how a word sounds. Korean sounds change depending on where they appear in a word: ㄱ sounds different at the start of 가다 than in the middle of 고기. The Korean IPA shows you exactly what is said, so you can pronounce words correctly.

3. Korean Minimal Pairs

Minimal pairs are 2 words that sound almost the same, except for 1 sound. Our Korean deck has 67 pairs covering the contrasts learners find hardest: plain vs aspirated vs tense consonants, ㅓ vs ㅗ, ㅡ vs ㅜ and final consonants. For example:

“달” (moon)

“탈” (mask)

“밤” (night)

“방” (room)

Learning minimal pairs improves both your pronunciation and your listening comprehension, and academic research backs this up. Ann Bradlow from Cornell University and colleagues found that minimal pair training improved learners’ ability to tell /r/ and /l/ apart from around 65 percent to around 82 percent accuracy, after 15 to 22 hours of training over 3 weeks. A 2020 study from UCAM University with 52 learners concluded that minimal pair training brought substantial improvements in both perception and production of the target sounds.
