IELTS Essential Vocabulary Flashcards (Bands 1–4)
Core English vocabulary for IELTS Bands 1 - 4. Builds the foundational word knowledge needed to understand questions, instructions, and everyday English in all four IELTS skills - with high-quality audio, IPA, and sentence examples.
IELTS Essential Vocabulary Flashcards (Bands 1–4)

The IELTS Essential Vocabulary Flashcards are a 2,000-card Anki deck covering the 2,000 most common English words — the foundation of IELTS success at Bands 1–4. Based on research by linguists Paul Nation, James Milton, Michael Lewis, and Stephen Krashen, you learn these words gradually in the context of real English sentences, so you see how each word behaves rather than simply memorising an isolated definition.
After you learn these 2,000 words, you will be able to understand approximately 90% of any given English text — the comprehension threshold that makes IELTS Reading passages and Listening recordings accessible. Each card includes high-quality audio, IPA, part of speech, frequency rank, a monolingual English definition, and an example sentence in context.

Language: IELTS English · Skill: Vocabulary · Cards: 2,000 cards · Level: Bands 1–4 · Time to Complete: 2–4 months
What You Learn
- The 2,000 most common English words, sequenced by frequency — so you always learn the highest-value words first
- Each word with high-quality audio (US or UK accent), IPA pronunciation, part of speech, and frequency rank
- Every word shown in a real English sentence — training you to understand words in context, the way they appear in IELTS Reading passages and Listening recordings
- A monolingual English definition for each word, so you build English-to-English thinking from day one — no translation required
- Two randomised card variations per word: one presenting the word, one presenting the sentence — for multi-angle retention
- Spaced repetition to focus review on the words you find hardest, with automatic progress tracking across all 2,000

2,000 Words — The IELTS Foundation
Research by linguists Paul Nation and Stuart Webb found that the top 2,000 words account for approximately 90% of words used in general English text. For IELTS candidates, mastering this core vocabulary is the single highest-return study investment available.
| Words learned | Comprehension | IELTS relevance |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 words | ~75% | Many gaps remain in Reading and Listening |
| 2,000 words | ~90% | Foundation for Bands 3–4; required before all higher study |
| 2,001–5,000 words | ~95% | Bands 5–8 (covered in the Advanced Vocabulary deck) |
IELTS assesses vocabulary across all four skills. In Reading and Listening, you cannot follow the argument or catch key details without the 90% comprehension this foundation delivers. In Writing and Speaking, Lexical Resource accounts for 25% of the score in each skill — assessed on range, accuracy, and appropriacy. Until the Bands 1–4 core is secure, time spent on higher-band preparation is inefficient.
Words in this deck are sequenced using frequency data from major corpora including the Corpus of Contemporary American English and the British National Corpus, supplemented by Speakada’s own analysis of billions of English words across millions of webpages. Each card also uses a real English sentence rather than a translation — following Michael Lewis’s research on “chunk” learning for abstract vocabulary and Stephen Krashen’s input hypothesis, which shows that learners acquire language fastest through comprehensible context slightly above their current level.
This deck is included in the IELTS Vocabulary Bundle, alongside Advanced Vocabulary (Bands 5–8) and Academic Vocabulary decks.
Available in American and British English
Both editions contain the same vocabulary — the audio uses native speakers of each respective accent. Choose the American English (USA) or British English (UK) edition when purchasing from the bundle.
