WHAT FRENCH GRAMMAR RULES SHOULD I LEARN & WHY?
If you’re a beginner French learner, then you should first learn grammar rules that give you the highest yield for your time and effort. It is too overwhelming to try to learn all French grammar rules at the same time.
We suggest that you learn French grammar rules according to their difficulty level on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is the international standard for measuring and testing language proficiency in foreign languages, including French.
Here is a list of CEFR levels and their description:
- A0 is the absolute beginner level
- A1 is the beginner level
- A2 is the elementary level
- B1 is the intermediate level
- B2 is the upper-intermediate level
- C1 is the advanced level
So if you are an absolute beginner in French, then it makes sense to start learning grammar rules from the A0 level and focus there. As you progress, then the next logical step would be to learn grammar rules from the French A1 level, A2 level, B1 level, B2 level, then C1 level. We believe that this the most efficient way to learn French grammar.
Our French Grammar Flashcards present you the most important and frequently used grammar rules from French A0 all the way up to French C1, so you can reach fluency in a more organized, structured and efficient way. We were inspired by linguist Paul Nation’s studies on the most frequently used words, and wanted to use that idea for the most frequently used grammar.
You save time and effort because we have organized all of the grammar rules, sentence examples, IPA, audio and translations for you up to the French C1 level. You can study the French Grammar Flashcards incrementally, from the easy beginner levels and then gradually improve to the higher levels of fluency. This is beneficial because you can get started straight away to study French Grammar with our flashcards, so you don’t waste time having to gather, prepare and organize the grammar materials and flashcards yourself.
You also get greater confidence that you’ve covered the top French grammar rules from A0 up to the C1 level. You can use the French Grammar Flashcards to fill in any grammar knowledge gaps you may have up to the C1 level. Most linguists and learners consider the C1 level to be the stage you can speak fluently at an advanced level.
According to the CEFR’s own level descriptions of the C1 level, when you reach the C1 level then you:
“Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.”– French C1 Level Description, according to CEFR
In addition, the French C1 level will help you with your daily life, relationships, education and work. The CEFR’s level descriptions say that if you reach French C1, then you:
“Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.”– French C1 Level Description, according to CEFR
At the C1 level, you are more likely to get a job, study abroad, get residency or even citizenship in a French-speaking country because the French C1 level is often above the minimum language requirement needed.
HOW DO I LEARN THE MOST COMMON FRENCH GRAMMAR?
If you’re a French beginner, and you want to speak fluently at the C1 level and pass the French C1 level exam, such as the DELF, then you’ll need to learn French grammar rules according to their relevant CEFR level. This is a good idea, but you probably want a clear plan for how to actually do it.
So, we made is easier for you by breaking down French grammar learning into 3 basic principles:
- First, learn “pop-up grammar” when you need it, and according to your level.
- Secondly, learn grammar using sentence-based flashcards.
- Thirdly, learn grammar with minimal pair sentences flashcards.
All 3 principles will help build your French grammar use and knowledge step-by-step.
1. Learning “Pop-up Grammar” When You Need It
The linguist, Stephen Krashen from University of Southern California, generally recommends that language learners acquire language through using input, such as books, movies, and so on. However, Krashen says that consciously learned grammar can still be useful, especially if you want to learn to say something correctly, and you can’t wait for language to be naturally acquired.
Consciously learned grammar has these functions:
- As a Monitor to help you self-correct,
- To make input more comprehensible,
- For language appreciation.
Krashen argues that “pop-up grammar” can provide information for each of these functions.
Pop-up grammar is a brief explanation of a grammatical rule or vocabulary item that generally takes only a few seconds and that can be done in the first language, especially in beginning levels.
We were inspired by Krashen’s research on comprehensible input and “pop-up grammar”, so we developed our French Grammar Flashcards based on his ideas. We provide you with simple, easily comprehensible sentences that incrementally introduce you to French grammar from the A0 absolute beginner level to the C1 advanced fluency level.
You get to learn grammar rules according to your current French level. When you use our flashcards with Anki’s spaced repetition system, then you get focus more on the grammar rules that are personally challenging for you, while seeing less of the grammar rules you have already mastered.
2. Learning Grammar with Sentence-based Flashcards
The linguist Stephen Krashen put forward the “input hypothesis”. Krashen states that learners progress in their knowledge of the language when they understand language input that is slightly more advanced than their current level. That is why you should focus on acquiring new French grammar rules step-by-step in the context of real French sentences. French sentences are authentic language input.
Our French Grammar Flashcards are all sentence-based, so you can take advantage of the benefits mentioned above. The front of our grammar flashcards include a French sentence which contains a target grammar rule. We leverage the power of Anki’s spaced repetition system to present you mini grammar lessons as you need it, as the back of each flashcard provides a clear grammar explanation.
As the language learner, your job will be to check whether you comprehend that sentence, and the grammar contained within it. If you do understand it, without needing to review the grammar rule, then you would have acquired that grammar rule in your memory, and you can pass the flashcards. However, if you still need help, then the back of our French Grammar Flashcards includes hints for the sentence translation and the “pop-up” grammar rule.
3. Learning Grammar with Minimal Pair Sentences Flashcards
Many French language learners can get mixed up with certain grammar rules, and when to use certain grammar in a French sentence. So, we’ve developed Minimal Pair Sentence flashcards where we show you 2 similar-looking French sentences, with one being grammatically correct and the other being wrong.
You need to choose which sentence is correct. If you get confused and need help, then the back of that flashcard will show you the answer, audio, IPA, as well as the English translation of the sentence and an explanation of the grammar rule.
These special Minimal Pair Sentences flashcards will help you distinguish between the very similar-looking sentences. This means that you’ll reduce your grammar mistakes, and avoid getting into embarrassing and confusing situations. As a result, you get greater confidence when you produce or comprehend the French language.
