What Vocabulary Do You Need for IELTS, and Why?
Vocabulary is assessed in all four IELTS skills. In Reading and Listening, your vocabulary range directly determines how much of the passage or recording you can understand. In Writing and Speaking, Lexical Resource, worth 25% of each score, is assessed on the range, accuracy, and appropriacy of the words you use.
Start with Frequency: Paul Nation's Research
Paul Nation's research demonstrates that learning the 2,000 most frequently used words gives you approximately 90% comprehension of any English text, the foundation for all further study. The Essential Vocabulary deck targets this high-frequency core, sequenced so you learn the most valuable words first.
The Band 5-to-7 Vocabulary Gap
IELTS candidates stuck at Band 5 or 6 are usually not failing grammar; they are failing vocabulary range and precision. The Advanced Vocabulary deck targets the nuanced, formal vocabulary that examiners associate with high Lexical Resource scores: accurate collocations, paraphrasing ability, and register-appropriate word choices in Writing Task 2 and Speaking Part 3.
Academic Vocabulary for IELTS Academic Module
Averil Coxhead's Academic Word List (AWL) identifies the 570 word families that appear most frequently across academic disciplines, the vocabulary IELTS Reading passages are drawn from. The Academic Vocabulary deck covers the full AWL, making academic texts significantly more accessible and directly improving Writing Task 1 and Task 2 Lexical Resource scores.
